A haunting, melancholy fable, "Tony Takitani" is the kind
of film that could seem tedious from a mere description. Approached
with the right mind-set, however, it's a hypnotic mood piece on
love and loss, one that knows —at 75 minutes—not to
overstay its welcome.
Tony Takitani (played by Issei Ogata) is a socially awkward illustrator
who's more interested in drawing machines than humans. Raised by
his saxophone-playing father (also Ogata), he's content with his
solitary life, until he falls for and weds co-worker Eiko (Rie Miyazawa).
Almost all the plot is related through voice-over narration, which
is occasionally spoken by the on-screen characters. Action within
scenes is minimal, as the camera glides laterally past moments that
seem hermetically sealed by its gaze.
