After completing the first module of this 12-hour workshop, participants will be familiar with the tools and resources available to professional translators, will be able to judge and use dictionaries efficiently, will know how to install international keyboards and spell check multilingual texts, will know how to access the diverse thesauri bundled with Word, how to use Track Changes for editing translations, and will be able to conduct targeted Internet searches. After completing the second module, participants will be familiar with the intricacies of translation, will be able to identify and avoid the principal pitfalls of the trade, will gain the confidence needed for writing naturally in the target language, and will learn strategies for translating culture. After completing the third module, participants will be familiar with stylistic differences between English and Spanish, will be able to handle English capitalization, punctuation, and transliteration from languages using non Roman alphabets, will be able to identify idioms, proverbs, buzz words, umbrella terms, allusions to canonical works and quotations from canonical works, will be able to judge when it is appropriate to raise or lower the register of a given text, and will be able to judge when it is advisable to omit or add information. After completing the fourth module, participants will be familiar with syntactic differences between English and Spanish such as the differences in collocations, rules governing BAGS adjectives, and the use of the English and Spanish gerunds. |

Born
and raised in Mexico, Verónica Albin has lived in the United
States for 27 years and is Senior Lecturer of Spanish and Translation
in the Center for the Study of Languages at Rice University. Verónica
is certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) in Spanish
<>
English and has passed the Senior Translator Exam of the United States
Department of State and the Interpreter Exam of the United States Department
of Justice. Ms. Albin has served as an English into Spanish grader for
the ATA National Certification Exam since 1991. Her articles on dictionaries,
language, and translation have been published in the Translation Journal,
the ATA The Chronicle and Intercambios, Rice University’s Orbis
Linguae, Apuntes of the New York Circle of Translators, Literal: Latin
American Voices, and The Vocabula Review. She is the author,
with María T. Coggins, of the Bilingual Glossary for Medical
and Healthcare Translators and has written chapters for The ATA
Scholarly Monograph Series: Medical Translation and Hispanic Issues:
Language and Empire, Vanderbilt University Press. Verónica
also works as a substantive editor and Spanish style editor for a number
